Coed Varsity Track · Sobota wins two state crowns to headline big day for Bearden track and field

Senior Josh Sobota won two state titles, and all seven of Bearden’s track and field athletes who competed at the state meet finished with all-state honors.

The 4×800 meter relay team placed seventh with a time of 8:17 seconds. The team consists of sophomore Ben Cruze, junior Luke Nelson, and seniors Nathaniel Blalock and Luke Brice.

Although the relay team had two new members this year, Nelson believes that their hard work throughout the season led to their success.

“We just went into every workout and every meet with regionals in mind,” Nelson said. “We really just ran for each other every day.”

Senior Sarah Harris placed fifth in the pole vault, and senior Abby Mink placed seventh in the shot put to join Sobota in Bearden’s strong showing in the throwing events.

Sobota beat the closest competition by double figures in distance, as he cruised to state titles in both shot put and discus.

“I was very happy to finish out the season strongly,” said Sobota. “I was hoping to leave my mark on Tennessee track and field, and I believe I did just that.

“I can’t wait to see the upcoming athletes that will grow to possibly break the records that I have set.”

Sobota will continue his track and field career next season at Kentucky.
