Coed Varsity Cross Country · Ruth leads cross country team by example, sets course record at Fender’s Farm

Senior Preston Ruth has experienced a great deal of success this season both as a runner and as a leader.

“Preston is a key leader,” Coach Ashley Powell said. “He is a good motivator in practice and meets, he gets everyone else pumped up.”

Ruth made a big splash at the Fender’s Farm Festival this week setting a new course record.

“When I crossed the line and saw that I had [set a personal record], I was really happy and was happy to set the record,” Ruth said.

Ruth’s teammates are grateful to have a leader that motivates them to be successful and push themselves to new heights.

“Knowing that he is out here working his tail off and doing well encourages us to follow suite,” senior Luke Nelson said. “He really leads by example, just always being first to warm up, encouraging us to get on the line early.”

Amid his personal success, Ruth remembers to stay humble and focus on his team. He credits his teammates for helping stay focused.

“Those guys help me stay grounded and focused on my goals, and I think it’s just a good team environment,” Ruth said.

The team now shifts their sights to the upcoming Bristol meet. The team is focused and ready to execute this Saturday.

“We know what we need to do,” Nelson said. “Work hard, run fast, it’s pretty simple.”

Coach Powell has high hopes for the upcoming meet as well.

“We are hoping to finish in the top three this weekend in Bristol,” Coach Powell said. “It’s an important training race as we get closer to KIL and regions.

“As a team, we want them to come together and really push one another and hopefully be towards the top.”
